Entertainment Along Blue Star Highway
Beards, Dreadlocks, and Rock’n’Roll: Sons of Psyience and Midwest Hype at Mickey’s Pub

When St. Joseph band Sons of Psyience began their set at Mickey’s Pub on Saturday, February 20, the audience was of a somewhat different makeup than most winter rock concerts in the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor area. This was a younger, longer-haired, more generously bearded (the men, not the women) crowd than usually appears at Mickey’s shows, or any for that matter, in the non-tourist months between November and May. Sons of Psyience played an energetic, jam-band progressive rock, with driving riffs and dynamic time changes. The band is made up of guitarist and lead vocalist Brenden Bowser, bassist Matthew Nelson, drummer John Howland, and percussionist Matthew Sypian. When I asked guitarist and lead singer Bowser who their bands influences were, he cited jam-band Umphrey’s McGee, but added: “Everyone wants to be like Led Zeppelin. But I think that’s our sound.” I don’t know about Led Zeppelin, but sounding like Sons of Psyience isn’t bad.

The headliner Saturday night was Midwest Hype, a ska-punk  band from LaPort, Indiana. They played a tight set, throwing in covers of hip-hop songs that got the audience, who were primarily (it appeared) Sons of Psyience fans, singing along. The best Midwest Hype cover, said Japhy Bartlett, bassist for the SW Michigan rock sensation The Chuck Yeagers, was Warren G’s “Regulate.” Midwest Hype is made up of Matthew (Wayne) Gillon on lead vocals and guitar, George-Matthew Prellwitz on  lead guitar, Nate Miller on bass, Max Kepler on drums, Kevin Krizmanich on keys, Ben Morrissey on Saxophone and flute, and Scott Whitford on tru
